Abstract

Many designs of dental implants have been developed and surface characteristics of implant fixtures have been discussed.
Under the concept of fibrointegration, such implants as submucosal, blade, etc. were used. But root-form implants have been widely used since the concept of osseointegration was accepted. In structure of the endosseous implant fixture. cylinder-type has been changed to thread-type.
The classification of methods for implant surface change is as follows;
Add material; electroplating, painting, coating, plasma spraying, vapor deposition
Remove material; chemical etching, sandblasting, machining, glow discharge, sputter etching
Change material; thermal treatment, ion implanatation, anodizing
Surface treatment for more favorable osseointegration has been much studied.
This article discusses various designs and surface characteristics of commercially used dental implant systems.
